The cause comes first

The American Academy of Dermatology emphasizes finding the cause of hair loss before choosing treatment. A clinician may consider when it began, the pattern of loss, scalp findings, and relevant medical history.

A photograph is one part of the picture

Bring past photographs if they help show what has changed. A consistent baseline can make follow-up conversations more useful, but a photograph alone does not establish a diagnosis.

Ask how the plan fits your situation

Discuss the reasoning behind any proposed treatment, alternatives, costs, and how the response would be reviewed. Sudden, patchy, painful, or inflamed hair loss warrants medical assessment.
